Google's New Gen AI Reports Are the Signal Shopify Merchants Have Been Waiting For

Josh Reeder-Esparza 4 min read

Google just added something to Search Console that most Shopify merchants haven’t seen yet: a dedicated performance report for generative AI search experiences. Same Search Console you’ve always used — but now there’s a separate panel showing how your content performs inside AI Overviews and other AI-generated answers, not just in the blue-link results.

That’s a meaningful separation. Your classic organic traffic and your AI visibility have always been two different things. Now Google is treating them that way in its own tooling.

What the new reports actually track

The Gen AI performance reports surface impressions, clicks, and click-through rates for content that appears inside Google’s AI-generated answers — distinct from standard organic results. When someone searches for “best waterproof hiking boots under $150” and an AI Overview surfaces at the top, the products and pages cited there now generate their own performance data.

This matters because a page can rank well in traditional results and show up rarely (or never) in AI-generated answers — or the reverse. The signals that earn citations in AI Overviews aren’t identical to the signals that drive rankings. You couldn’t measure the gap before. Now you can.

Why product data is at the center of this

AI Overviews don’t work the way traditional search does. They don’t just rank your page — they read it, extract facts, and synthesize an answer. A product that loses that process is one whose attributes weren’t legible enough to quote: vague description, no structured data, hero image with details that only live as pixels.

Google’s own documentation on optimizing for generative AI search repeatedly comes back to the same three things: structured data, specific attribute-rich copy, and image alt text that describes what the image actually shows. These are the inputs the model uses when it decides whether to cite your product in an answer.

Merchants who open this new Search Console report and see low AI impressions relative to their organic traffic have a diagnostic now. The next question is which products are underperforming and why — and that’s where the data gets actionable.

What this changes for Shopify stores

Most Shopify merchants have spent years optimizing for rankings: meta titles, collection structure, backlinks. That work isn’t wasted, but it’s no longer the complete picture. The stores that show up well in AI Overviews will have:

  • Product descriptions that state material, size, use case, and fit in plain text — not just in imagery.
  • Image alt text that describes what’s in the photo: "Navy merino wool crew neck, laid flat on white surface" not "product-image-37482.jpg".
  • Schema.org structured data (Product, Offer, AggregateRating) that gives the AI a machine-readable fact sheet to quote from.

A store with 500 products that’s never systematically addressed any of those three points has a real surface area problem. The gap between its organic presence and its AI visibility will show up clearly in the new Search Console report.

Where to start

Open Search Console, navigate to the Search type filter, and look for the new Gen AI option. Compare your AI impressions to your organic impressions across your top product categories. If the ratio is low, start with the highest-GMV products — the ones where being cited in an AI Overview would actually move revenue.

For each of those products, the audit is: does the description say what the product is made of, what it’s for, and who it fits? Is there alt text on every image that tells a model what it’s looking at? Does the page emit structured data that a machine can parse without interpreting visual elements?

Beaconed runs that audit automatically across your full Shopify catalog and generates the missing pieces — alt text, attribute-rich descriptions, and structured data — at scale. The new Search Console data gives you the before. Beaconed closes the gap so you have an after worth measuring.
